Summer Conference 2024

CALL FOR PAPERS
Animal History Group Conference
Online, 27–28 June 2024

AHG24: Movers and Shapers

The Animal History Group is a network for postgraduates, academics, archive and museum professionals and anyone interested in animals in history.

We are delighted to announce that we will be holding our eighth annual conference online on Thursday 27 and Friday 28 June.

We welcome papers from across academic disciplines which speak in some way to the conference theme of ‘Movers and Shapers’. This broad theme aims at exploring the ways in which animals and animal lives have both shaped and been shaped by history. Potential papers might explore how changes in (for example) economics, society, science, or politics have impacted animal bodies and lives, and/or how historical processes and changes have been shaped by the lives and impacts of animals. We set no limitations on species or period, and welcome papers exploring any aspect of human-animal relationships in the past, whether concerning companion animals, livestock, wild animals, animal health and disease, or animal afterlives.

Submissions from graduate students are especially encouraged, and we welcome informal enquiries from anybody who has questions about the theme or the event more generally.

Speakers will be convened into panels of related 15-20 minute papers by the conference organisers, with a shared session for questions at the end of each panel. The exact format and timings of the event are yet to be confirmed, but we welcome submissions from scholars in all parts of the world and will endeavour to put together a final programme which accommodates international time differences.
